L1049 Constellation 1/72 Heller

One of too many wip models on the bench is this Connie ( I also have a further advanced L749 on the go)
Now the 749 kit was not too bad to put together, but the 1049 with the longer fuselage was a bit of a beast to put together. trying to get the fuselage halves together with a minimum step along the join was almost impossible, the thin plastic left me doubting the strength of the seams so I doubled the join internally with with thin plastic card, I could use the fuselage like a baseball bat now (esp with the ton of lead in the nose!). Now, because of the small central fin I did not notice that there was a subtle twist to the fuselage.. this only became evident to me when it was time to glue the empennage on, as I was holding the set squares up while the glue was setting this is what I saw:

The empennage was about 5 degrees twisted to one side!.. I pondered as to how I was gonna fix this now bin-able abomination, I toyed briefly (a nano-second) with splitting the doubled fuselage seam and trying to take the twist out but rejected it as too hard too damaging and no guarantee of success.. so on to plan 2:

Put a line of tape to mark out a cutting point on the fuselage,
Use a circular saw disc on my trusty dremel to saw off the tail,
glue stringers to the interior fuselage side,
glue the tail back on so that it is square,
fill the join with light curing putty
sand
and 45 minutes later it was done!

That is some major surgery!

Can I trouble you to post a pic or two of your display case - looks very cool!

Cheers

Excellent work, Wal, and a great fix for the twist, too. I'll be looking for a twist like that in my own kit, when I get to it.

Termporary home made copies of decals being used to mark the white / siver paint division. Got it wrong the first time around. It didnt help that the cabin window line has to be higher than the kits windows to enable a best alignment and fit of the 3 part fuselage decal. To add to my woes I ruined the real decals because I forgot to coat them and of course discovered that my previous masking was way off.

So, I'll mask her up again and adjust the separation line.

Sensational Wally. It's coming along very nicely. And I'd be lying if I said I wasn't jealous of your cabinets, both what's in them and the cabinets themselves :) :) :) :)

Hey Paul, I must say that the purchase of the display cabinets was one of my best ever modelling buys, I enjoy the hobby far more now that I can safely and dust-freely show my models in a very space efficient way, not only do I appreciate them more but my visitors (few as the are) will also stop and have a good look, before when they were sitting atop shelves no-one gave them much of a second glance

Yesterday my replacement decal sheet arrived, the originals shattering in many pieces by just looking at them! What a bugger of a job it was aligning the 3 piece cheat line, I could not get it all straight, this is best I could do. Anyway after doing all the dangly bits and props I had to sit on its legs and check it out, thought I'd take a picture, before I do the aerials, touch ups and decal trimming.
