G-FIRE - 1/48 Airfix Spitfire Mk.XIV

Postby Adam the Akrodude » Fri Sep 09, 2022 3:03 pm

After a massive break from modelling due to COVID pandemic induced malaise, I'm finally back into modelling. I just had too much going on during the pandemic to remotely be inspired to do any modelling. The only attempt I made was refurbishing my old Tamiya 1/48 Spitfire Mk.1 for a club display for Expo - that at least got the ol' juices flowing!

Anyway, the "fun" is beginning to return and I've been working on G-FIRE's cockpit, which I might add I believe was all black. I've done a tonne of research even looking at a near current open cockpit photo of the repainted G-FIRE (which now resides in USA) plus a bunch of other photos and it sure appears as the cockpit is all black. I've elected to stick with the "paper/resin" brown seat as I've not been able to see any photo of G-FIREs seat, so sticking with standard config for a Mk.XIV Spity. Still a few little things to do in the cockpit, then it will be buttoned up into the fuselage.

"G-FIRE" to me is one of the hottest looking prop jobs ever. The Mk.XIV Spity is one beast of a aeroplane! Hopefully it will come together OK. Plenty of other people have built this kit without major headaches.

Cheers RayS!

Cheers Paul! I'll list my references and post photos of the real G-FIRE to help you and anyone else who goes on this journey. There's some good stuff at Britmodeller on G-FIRE.

G-FIRE cockpit finished. Parts count over 80 - yeah, yeah I know I have issues! Some reference photos that have lead to my conclusion that G-FIRE cockpit is black. This is also the conclusion of others I've read at Britmodeller as well.

Looks good. I've got this kit too, was looking at it thinking I'd probably mask and paint those pin stripes. I reckon that will be a lot easier than using the decals.

I'll have a crack at using the decals first. Plenty have done so and at least look OK in photos - see how I go. Got to get the sucker painted first!
