Here's an idea, how about slug us with a whopping $10 per tax payer VLAT levy? That will generate $110 Million. How many VLAT's can we hire for that annually? I know, I know - how could such a pathetically simplistic idea like this work?
That last mob in power put each and every one of us in the can for around $28,000 each (deficit dived by total no. taxpayers), I'm happy to chip in another $10-$20 dollars for some added fire insurance - ah, put it on the tab! Aren't our armed forces another kind of insurance? Just because some asset isn't used, doesn't mean it's absolutely necessary. The F-111 never dropped a bomb in anger, but it was our big stick in this region. Other developed nations have these sort of fire fighting assets, why not us?
As USAF Capt. Murphy experienced in his ejection seat testing, over a period of time/series of events, if there is a chance of something going wrong, it will eventually. If all this global warming hoo haa can be believed, summers will get longer and our land drier. There then is every chance of 2-3 large fires happening at the same time across our country at some stage surely? Does this not suggest then we need a more multi-tiered approach to fire fighting?
I know I'm largely preaching to the converted here. Interesting that one model can generate such discussion.
