1/72 DH Dragon Rapide

Postby Migrant » Sat Jul 13, 2019 3:17 am

This was built last year, it's the old 70s Heller kit but re-boxed by Tasman. The subject aircraft was used as a flying billboard, with neon letters under the wings for advertising – in this case, a film. Tasman actually included some glow-in-the-dark pigment for the 3D-printed letters but I couldn't get it to adhere properly,so went with white. The mounting frames were also 3D-printed and included in the kit (they're marginally too large but oh well). I re-scribed the panel lines (there weren't many), replaced the side windows with clear acetate, replaced the mis-shapen props, and rigged the model with Uschi Van DerRosten fine thread.

Anyone want a Airfix Dragon Rapide kit as I'll never get it looking this good? Very nicely done mate :)

Really great build, and very interesting with the flying Billboard

In addition to the great overall build I liked the racks under the wings which would not have been easy. Did you make the lettering yourself or did it come from somewhere else?

Beautiful work - simply stunning!

I got to see on of these being rebuilt over the course of a few years - the final ten years at least! One lived in the hangar where the little aerobatic aeroplane I had a share in lived. You've captured the true essence of Rapide!

Check out the pictures of VH-UXZ in the attached. Climbed in the ol' girl a couple of times during restoration. https://www.goodall.com.au/australian-aviation/dh89/dh89.htm
