The model depicts the 3/4 size "look-alike" of the studio prop and was built for the flying sequences. It was written-off in the crash that killed Paul Mantz, its pilot. A cosmetically modified N.A. O47B was used for the final flying scenes. The Phoenix ll was a composite of other aircraft components, N.A. T-6 engine, cowling, wheels and some cockpit components, tailwheel was the nosewheel from a Ryan Navion and the wings from a Beech C45. The fuselage was steel tube construction covered in plywood.

As the above image shows, the model too came from the spares' box. Cowling, Corsair (origin unknown), engine, (likewise), centre fuselage, Airfix Harvard, rear fuselage, Airfix P61 boom slightly fattened and Airfix Boston wings. The remainder scratchbuilt.

A most excellent model once again Fred. It's a wonderful tribute for both this film and Paul Mantz.

Big BRAVO from me!

Cheers

Adam
