1/48 Tamiya Do-335 Pfeil

Here's my Dornier Arrow. Always been intrigued by this very high performance twin. There is a story of one Do-335 being ferried to France after the war and the German pilot betting his American Mustang pilot escorts he could beat them on one engine alone. This he did and won a carton of cigarettes! Rear engine overheating was an issue never ironed out and did kill a British test pilot. Still, it's an awesome looking aeroplane I think. Like many Luftwaffe subjects, deciding on the actual paint scheme is a nightmare. I decided on RLM 81,82,76 - the official paint scheme for the pre-production series. There is speculation that Dornier used old paint stock of RLM 70, 71 and 65. I do think this was used on the earlier prototypes.
I found one colour photo that tends to indicate I'm right with my decision. My Gunze RLM 82 was a bit too light (thanks Gunze!), making the contrast between the 81 & 82 a bit too much - oh well. I may sort this out one day.

This kit is just amazing and goes together, well, almost falls together really. I slightly blinged it up with a CMK cockpit (unnecessary really). plus a little Eduard etch in the wheel wells (necessary, as they are pretty bare).

Here's a Do-335 at Munich/Reim post war - shot up a little, followed by my effort.

Nice Anteater.

Scary to think what Nazi Germany would have been capable of if they hadn't been bombed back to the Stone Age.

Certainly is. Von Braun did help fast track humanity to get to the moon. They were so far head with liquid fuel rocket engines, guidance, axial flow jet engines, supersonic and hypersonic research, etc, etc. Very inventive bunch. Great at starting wars, not so good at ending them though!

One of my Great Uncles certainly helped in that regard (with the bombing) as a senior nav with Pathfinders. One poor cousin of my mother not quite as much. He was a Flt Sgt and pilot of a Lancaster with 460 Sqn and was shot down and killed over Holland whilst on his way to Dortmund.

Thing is they make such good cars now - as you know!
