A place for our military aviation modellers to show their stuff. It may not be civil but it still has a home here

1/48 XP 72 Ultrabolt

my first completion for 2024
it's a hobby boss P47D bubble top with a solid resin nose to make it an XP72...i bought a resin kit of the XP72 off a very small company off facebook and was pretty disappointed..the kit was based on the very old Monogram kit buy much rougher...but the nose wasnt to bad so a plan to graft it on a much better donor kit was hatched.

there was a large amount of miliput to make it fit.

but with a lot of sanding and putty i gut it to look halfway decent

the rest of the built is pretty much all hobby boss and simple

except i added metal barrels and pitot the prop is from the newly released Halbered Xp72 conversion as are the serials.

its far from perfect BUT when i started it it was the mot likely way i was going to get one on the shelf.........or so i thoughtas meantioned above as i was nearing completion Halberd models announced their own conversion for the Tamiya kit so i had to have it....luckily the two airframes differed as one had the bloody huge 4 bladed prop this one has and the other had a contrarotating prop and conveniently Halberd supplies both.

the real plane was built(2 of them) they were basically a P47D bubble top with an R2800 corncob fitted it was planned to be two stage supercharged with a remote engine driven super charger behind the cockpit(though it was never fitted) they acheaved a top speed of 490 MPH and were planned to be armed with either 6 50 cal machime guns or 4 37mm cannons
