F27pax am I right in assuming that you spray the auto lacquer through your normal airbrush?

Yes, out of the airbrush. The paint has to be thinned at the ratio of 1:1.5 and it comes out beautifully and dries to touch very quickly. These days I've also decanted the Tamiya Pure White which comes out of the airbrush the same way. With some good general purpose thinner cleaning up afterwards is also very easy.

Hmmmm interesting. Thanks for that mate. When I get back from TVL I might go down to the local auto paint shop and get some white to practise with. I'd reckon they'd be able colour match any colour you wanted and soooo much cheaper as you said. Thanks heaps :)

FYI here is a photo of the first coat of white automotive lacquer on one of my current projects. Applied in a fairly thin coat over Tamiya rattle can grey primer. Three coats should do it.

The paint shop I went to makes up paint to any colour you want so I got them to make a can of Boeing Grey (BAC707) and Airbus Grey. Very handy and a lot cheaper than trying to get the Xtracolor enamels these days.

Hi F-27pax,
Gee....the big ol 743 looks really good so far. Can you give us some details about the kit, I am really looking forward to watching this one.

I have a REALLY big 707 that would benefit from a cheaper way to cover the white surface of the jet.
Any ideas what type of white would be best? I mean...is there a code I should quote when requesting this stuff from the repair dude at the local panel shop? 1:50 707's really chew thru the paint.

The 747-300 uses most of the old Revell/Advent 747-100 combined with the extended upper deck from a Revell 747-400 kit. The shorter upper deck will go onto the the 747-400 kit to make a Freighter version sometime down the track. I'm aware that there are accuracy problems in both the kits but since I have plans to make a total of eight 747s I'm not inclined to spend a lot of money on getting improved parts such as the JT9Ds, which are not perfect in the kit.

For many years I tried to save money on the white paint I used on models, usually enamel house paint. The result is that they have all yellowed over the years and I'll have to remake or repaint most of them. So what I learned was that saving a few dollars in the quality of paint only leads to trouble later on. The white I bought was a two liter can of 'Spartan Super-cryl advanced acrylic lacquer'. It has a serial number but I've spilled paint over it and can't read it. You will also need a tin of good quality thinner, there's no point in buying cheap stuff if you want a good finish. That should be more than enough to cover a 1/50 707, though will also need lost of metallic finish.

I guess this place is a good place to start looking for the paint?

Hi F-27pax,
Thanks for that info. From what I can see you have done a nice job of cross-kitting to achieve a 747-300.
I have a similar project siting of the shelf-of-doom, only mine is planned to be a Qantas 747-338 with the "short-body" Rolls Royce RB211s. On seeing what you have done though I must admit to feeling a little lazy and amateur in my approach. All I did was back-date the wings from a 400 to a 300, ( I was sort of hoping no one would notice that my "300" actually had 400 leading edge fairings :? ). Anyway, on seeing your 300 I will now go away and re-think what I want to do with mine.

As can be seen, I still have much work to do on my 338 including completing the re-shaping of the wing-tip areas.
