Historical photos..some more added

Postby VH-WAL » Sun Dec 16, 2018 10:37 pm

Three or four weeks ago I started tossing a lot of reference material out..it's ok most of it was sourced from the internet anyway! Then I started selling off the stash as my interests have changed. One of the guys I sold something to, asked me if I had any pictures of cranes used in the goldfields of PNG in the 30's. I had a distant memory of seeing some pics and looking at my PC and laptop I realised I was missing some historical pictures I was given by Dennis Gray some 10 years ago and also pics I had found in the Exxon historical files.

I dusted off my old laptop and found them there, these pictures must never be lost so I am putting them "out there" maybe they will help other modellers and aviation historians:

Like that photo of the G23 very much. And the whole stream is fantastic Wally! Thank-you for that.

From the stream I now know what scheme to put my Ford Trimotor in whenever I get around to it.

Do you know how many different types of Junkers aircraft operated in PNG? Are there any references that you know of?

I have a magazine article somewhere about junkers in australia.. I hope I didnt chuck it out 3 weeks ago in the big purge!

I know there were 2 F13s, at least 2 W34s, 3 G31s and the JU86 which did not go to PNG as far as I know

Four according to this :

"Four other G 31s were sold for freighting cargo in New Guinea. Operated by Guinea Airways, one was owned by the airline itself, while the other three were owned by the Bulolo Gold Dredging Company. Powered by Pratt & Whitney Hornets, these differed from the G 31 airliners in having open cockpits, and a large hatch in the fuselage roof to accommodate the loading of bulky cargo via crane.[3] In one particular operation, the G 31s were used to airlift eight 3,000 tonne (3,310 ton) dredges (in parts) from Lae to Bulolo. Three of the aircraft were destroyed in a Japanese air raid on Bulolo on 21 January 1942, and the remaining aircraft was pressed into RAAF service ten days later. This machine (construction number 3010, registration VH-UOW) was seriously damaged in an accident at Laverton, Victoria on 31 October that year after it careened off the runway and collided with and destroyed the Minister for Air's car.[4][5] Although judged beyond repair by the Air Force, it eventually returned to freighter use in New Guinea for some time after the war."

So was the one (c/n 3010 VH-UOW) used by the RAAF the Guinea Airways one or one of the Bulolo ones and was it given an "A" number? Must look the "A" book up.
