Corsair @ Point Cook this Sunday 1pm

Postby Tony P » Fri Oct 24, 2014 6:17 pm

For anyone in the area, the RAAF Museum is having the Corsair as the subject of it's interactive flying display. Starts at 1pm sharp on Sunday. I should be there. The Corsair will be based at Tyabb.

Don't be surprised to see it in formation with a Jabiru and a Foxbat....or possibly circling the field where the Jab did a forced landing..
Pretending to do it TAC style with the big boys since 1987
Also, we don't need no steenkin' VLATs!

Hands up who saw the Corsair at PCK today? Me! :D Out freakin' standing!

@Tony, first of all, thanks very much for your alert of this event - CHEERS!

- Could a Corsair fly that slow? - maybe with high angle of attack and a bit of power (hanging on the prop)? I would think that the prop torque would make this impossible with the aeroplane wanting to rotate around the prop at low airspeed and high power. According to the brilliant pilot Peter Clements at PCK today, he's coming down final at 100 knots and going over the fence on landing at around 90 knots. Were you there Tony? I was the one hanging over the barricade drooling like Homer Simpson at that bent wind beast of the air! How was the sound of that R-2800 cranking up! Oh Baby!

ARRRRGGGHHH - forbidden Corsair!

Years ago I was lucky to be part of a Mustang/Cherokee Archer formation with me taking the photos in the back of the Archer. According to Guy Bourke, he had to drop 1 stage of flap and had the gear warning horn blaring the whole time we were at the Archers' max cruise speed of 120 knots. Possible that the Corsair may hang in the air a bit better at low speed not having that laminar flow wing and more stable at low speeds than the Mustang?

Really enjoyed my day at PCK. A Roulette PC-9 did a nice solo performance to start proceedings. Of course the Corsair won with it's brutish looks, kick ass presence and out and out noise! Ya just can't beat cubic inches!

I'm sure others have much better pics than the ones I took - I must admit I spent more time watching directly than through the camera... friggnawesome..
