Well It's Done! I am going to Oshkosh 2015

Postby VH-WAL » Tue Dec 02, 2014 11:23 am

Just paid my deposit, going through Ian Allen aviation tours as this will be a side trip from my holiday in the UK. I had to choose between RIAT and Oshkosh as the dates conflicted, modern jets register fairly low on my interestomometer so Oshkosh it was. It wasnt an easy decision though I changed my mind half a dozen times in as many days, will I won't I, will I won't I ..you only live once.. I will

Super jealous Wally! Reno and Oshkosh are at the top of my list of events to visit with Reno at the very top and Oshkosh second. Now of course this is the perfect opportunity for Ray to step in now like he must and once again post his all time fav airshow pic! :D

Here is a decent depiction of how I would look if I ever get the chance to get to Reno or Oshkosh.

Looking forward to at least seeing some of your superb photos once you get there! Who knows, there are quite a few tatts draws between then and now, so could see you there!

All the best

Lots of great things to see and do at Oshkosh. :D
But seriously Wal you will not regret it....Knotty and I spent a week at Oshkosh 2012 and it was one of the best and most memorabile and enjoyable weeks of my life. One hint though, save your souvenir-buying till the last day when everything is sold-off cheap.

Jealous as Wally. I'd love to go there some day as well as Reno :)

Question... with 500,00 people visiting over the week... just how hard is it to get good photo vantage spots for the airshows?

And what souvenirs should I look for Ray?

Wal.
When you get there you will see just how well-organised and laid-out the Oshkosh venue is, (lay-out designed by aircraft enthusiasts for aircraft enthusiasts). Knotty and I had no problems getting photos and nor did and our closest 500.000 friends :D

Case in point:

For interment close up photos of some truly remarkable aeroplanes I would suggest that you be on site at opening time each day. We found that the first hour or two each morning the airfield was pretty sparsely populated and this presented ample opportunity to get up close and personal with the aeroplanes.

The "souvenirs" I was referring to were things like shirts, caps , cups, programs, vids etc. These items tend to be date-specific eg "Oshkosh EAA Air Venture 2015", so by the final day most vendors are keen to off-load at very reasonable prices, (and I am led to believe that Reno is the same).
One other thing Wal.....it maybe very hot, so wear comfortable light cloths, take a good hat, sunnys, and lots of sun screen. I found though that sitting on the grass in the shade of the wing of a C-46, P-51, or B-17 was a most relaxing, atmospheric, and comfortable way to watch the daily air show :D
TOR
PS: don't forget to visit the temporary sea plane base on Lake Winnebago just down the road from the main Oshkosh venue.....very worthwhile indeed. You can catch a regularly-timed shuttle bus from the main airfield all through the day.
